The Future is Here!

Server Upgrades

Technology keeps on moving forward at a rapid pace both in hardware and software. You either stay with it or you try and struggle by with the technology of yesteryear. That's not a good way to do business......and eventually you won't have a business! So this month our old Dedicated Server in London (circa 2014) was finally retired and replaced with a powerhouse system to keep us at the forefront of the industry.

So what's changed?

CPU
Our new server is an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2450 0 @ 2.10GHz with 32 CPUs and 20 MB SmartCache. Among it's capabilities are Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology, and Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x).

Memory
As per our previous server, we have 32GB RAM.....but of a much later generation for faster speeds.

Hard Drives
This is the biggest game-changer of the lot because our old 1TB SATA drive has been replaced by 6 x 480GB Solid State Drives (SSD).
SSD Drives use flash memory to deliver vastly superior performance and durability over traditional SATA hard drives. Because without moving parts to slow your computer down, SSD's offer instant-load performance, and faster application loading times. Plus, they're more durable! With traditional hard drives, the continuous motion generated by small moving parts creates heat, which is a leading factor in hard drive failure. SSD is what you actually have in your mobile phone, and you know how much quicker that is compared to your nomal desktop PC.
The reason you don't have SSD drives in your home computer is price. They are very expensive.....and we've got SIX of them.

RAID 6 Array
The 6 SSD drives are set up in a RAID 6 configuration. This means that the system can continue to run after two disks fail, and lost data can be automatically reconstructed by the IOA after a disk failure. Also, two failed disk units can be replaced without stopping the system. I certainly don't want to test this aspect, but it's nice to have the peace of mind that goes with it.

To summarise, we want to offer the best hosting experience possible. This massive technology upgrade ensures that we can continue to provide high spec servers populated with a very low number of clients, delivering maximum CPU and memory allocation. This is the critical factor NOT diskspace! So don't be misled by ridiculous marketing ploys about unlimited webhosting which doesn't actually exist.
Don't think for one minute that you will get the same experience on some hosting reseller offering resources that they don't actually have, while simultaneously quoting prices that are financially unsustainable. Not all web hosting is the same.

Please note that these hosting services are only available to our web design clients on sites that we have built. We do not accept outside hosting clients as we will not introduce any risky, outdated, or vulnerable software onto our servers. Yes......we turn hosting clients away on a weekly basis! Crazy business logic so I've been told......but we're not compromising our standards.

Our goal is to give our clients the best experience possible, and we try our very best to achieve that. Hence the major upgrade of our hosting infrastructure to reflect the ongoing advancements in technology. Peace of Mind

Peace of Mind......how much is that worth to you? Is it even possible to even put a price on it? Because when prospective clients initially contact us, they invariably want a quotation based on their requirements. That's quite understandable......we know they'll be contacting other designers with the same request in order to compare prices.

However, a price comparison is only valid when you're comparing "like for like". And in our case that's going to be difficult, because the depth of service and support that we provide on an ongoing basis far exceeds most other web designers. That, alone, is what makes us different, because we bring peace of mind!

Now I'm aware that there are many good web designers out there......but there are also a large number of "putter-uppers". 
Basically a "putter-upper" can be defined as someone who puts a site up, takes the money.....and is gone! If you've got problems you're on your own! Not sure how to do something or need advice? Then be prepared to cross their palm with even more silver first.
A "putter-upper" sees the transaction as a one night stand, whereas a professional web designer is looking to build a longterm relationship. Who would you prefer to entrust the future of your business with?

To illustrate this point, I'm going to recount a real life example that we experienced recently when a potential client made the wrong choice! It's by no means a one-off scenario......it tends to happen on a regular basis as people prioritise "cheap" as the overriding factor in their purchasing decision. This course of action rarely ends well! We all want value for money......but some things you just don't cut corners on, because not all web designers are created equal!

The story goes like this: We were contacted in June by someone wanting a quotation for a business site. After speaking to them and analysing their requirements we gave them a price.....and never heard any more. Until last week!
Back they came, but with a request for us to repair a site because it had been hacked and destroyed within a month. Apparently their "web designer" didn't want to know and blamed the Hosting company. The Hosting company (who are bottom of the barrel as well) blamed the web designer. The Hosts did manage to restore the site from a backup taken a month ago (so they lost a month's data)......but they were then back to where they were prior to hacking. Just a matter of time before it's blitzed again!

We always make it clear that we don't work on other peoples' sites....only our own. After all.....if you're not a WebSpain client you can't expect to receive the premium level of support that our clients enjoy. As it was, the site was done in Wordpress, and we're solely Joomla developers.....so we couldn't have helped anyway. But I did give them details of a couple of developers who may be able to sort it out......but their services won't come cheap.

What a mess......and with a site that was only a month old! That trainwreck happened because they prioritised "cheap" over everything else. They did not compare "like for like" or even consider the necessity of ongoing support or assistance. Ultimately, the cheap price from the "putter-upper" is going to turn out to be a lot more costly in the long run, without even factoring in the stress, frustration, and helplessness when faced with a situation that they didn't understand.

Obviously, there's absolutely nothing wrong with looking for a competitive price when you're buying something. But don't confuse "cheap" with "value for money", because these are two different things. Compare prospective designers on a "like for like" basis!

As far as what we bring to the table, it's 40 years business experience, 30 years of which is in IT, with the last 20 years solely in Web Design and Hosting. Now factor in 500+ clients in 10 different countries, our own dedicated servers in both the UK and US, and longstanding contracts with the Spanish government and Military Divisions linked to NATO. Just try matching those.....and that's before we even get started on the levels of customer service! Remember what I said.....you must compare "like for like".

So if you're looking for a total web package incorporating both design and hosting.....do your research. The professionals may be slightly more expensive, but as people find out, it can ultimately end up costing you a whole lot more when you deal with an amateur! Practise due diligence, look for a verifiable track record at a professional level, read Client Testimonials and take up references!

Mobile First!

Google have announced major changes to the way they index websites! It's now Mobile First!
What this means is that instead of Google using the content of the desktop version for evaluating a website, they will now be visiting the mobile site first. Effectively, the desktop version has been demoted.
We've been into the mobile era for some years now, and if you still don't have a mobile compatible site in place, then you've got a problem. Google have stated that they will still crawl the desktop version, but how high you're going to rank with just that one option remains to be seen.

If you've got a mobile compatible site then you're still not necessarily in the clear. Because if your mobile site was just a barebones "stripped down" version containing limited content.....then that's what will be evaluated and your rankings will drop accordingly. In fact, Google have even said to remove sites like this until they are on a par with the desktop version.
That's a worrying scenario for those people who've paid for a mobile site, because now they're going to find that what they've got is not what Google wants! They'll probably need a new mobile site, which may well entail having to replace the desktop version as well.

However, if you're a WebSpain client you'll know that there's never any need to worry! This will not affect you!
Simply because we've only ever built mobile sites that contain the full content of the desktop version. No difference whatsoever, and it's been that way since we started building mobile compatible sites four years ago. And unlike others, we never charged extra for mobile compatibility, they came that way as standard!

To summarise, businesses without mobile compatible sites have got a problem, and businesses with stripped-down mobile sites have got a problem!

Life on the Dark Side!

We've always attempted to keep our clients safe from the undesirable elements and the grief that go along with doing business on the Internet. In effect we keep you within a protective shield so you don't see these things. Therefore you don't get grief. It just works! You don't even need to think about it!

I'm sure you're all familiar with the phrase "you get what you pay for", and this has never been more true than in the case of internet services. Particularly web hosting! Over a year ago, we published an article "Not all web hosting is created equal" where we detailed exactly what we bring to the table in terms of web hosting services. But things have changed since then......we've advanced even further with the addition of Cloud Linux on the servers.

We believe that no other web designer providing hosting services offers the allround quality of service that we deliver.....day after day.
And this is not just at server level......it's also at site level, which no other web host will manage for you. With a normal web host, your site is your responsibility.....not theirs. But in our case, we handle it all to give you total peace of mind.

Obviously I would say that....wouldn't I? But what about the experience of a former client who went elsewhere, and actually discovered for herself what life is like on the Dark Side?

"The saying "You do not know what you have until it's gone" has never been so true for my husband and I.
Having been with WebSpain for around 9 years, WebSpain not only built our two business websites we were a hosting client too. During this whole time we had no issues whatsoever with our sites or hosting.

However as time went on our sites were considered "old " in the techno world and we didn't really have time to get round to upgrading them. This meant that as our sites were old, Webspain could not really support them any longer on their servers, as they are exceptionally up to the minute with hosting etc. Therefore we had to move. We changed to another hosting company and have had nothing but problems since. These varied from no e-mails, lost emails, and site down time, all of which is a nightmare when running a web based business. In the end we could not even get our e-mails.

So in desperation, we went to Pete for help and he ended up logging onto their server and rectifying the issue that the other hosting company were unable to do. The standard of service and professionalism of WebSpain can really not be compared to the many other companies out there. Believe me, we know and it has cost us dearly".

And that is the reality of the situation! I know the hosting company that she's with, and overall they have a good reputation. But we deliver a total allround package that far exceeds what any pure web host offers......and once you get accustomed to that as being the norm then anything else is going to fall short.

We haven't published this to blow our own trumpet, we've published this to make you aware of the reality here. And the reality is that you cannot compare the service that a basic web host provides against the totally rounded and all encompassing range of services that we deliver. They are totally different things.

In some cases you could save yourself a few Euros by switching to someone who just provides web hosting.....or you could even pay more. But in both cases you are still not going to get the allround level of service that we deliver.
All you will do is introduce a different element into the equation. And that element is grief! And going from my experience, the less you pay, the more the grief is going to increase! Just remember that not all web hosting is created equal, and Life on the Dark Side may not be what you expect.

Time for Lockdown?

Security is the most important aspect of any internet based application. Bar none! Just because you haven't experienced bad things.....bad things do happen, and it's getting worse. Every day we battle with various attempted security breaches at both server and site level. If they're particularly serious then we let clients know.

It doesn't help that despite numerous security advisories, some clients knowingly continue to run obsolete and insecure software. Unfortunately there's only so much we can do in these situations because vulnerabilities actually exist......so it's only a matter of time before somebody exploits them. That's an absolute fact.

If you're on current software (which 99% of our clients are) then the risk is greatly reduced. It doesn't mean you're impervious to intrusion by any means, but the odds in your favour are a lot better. But what do you do if somebody wants you taken out of commission for either business or personal reasons?

Now this is where it gets interesting......because recently, two sites have gone through a period of sustained and premeditated hacking attempts. And one of them was ours! Yes.....I'm talking about this site!

In our case, somebody (for whatever reason) bombarded the site with intrusion attempts. And despite everything being locked down tight, they got in. We were onto it virtually instantly and dealt with it, but the results could have been catastrophic.
So it was at that point we had to rethink our options. We immediately put in a commercial website firewall application along with a number of other security related initiatives......which for obvious reasons we can't elaborate on. Since then all has been well, but we're expecting a repeat at any time, and no doubt this will be at an even higher level of expertise.

The second incident occurred very recently......and it was directed at one of our lady clients. Somebody who's been with us for many years and has a very successful business. Her attacks were perpetrated over a longer period and at a much higher volume than ours. It sent her bandwidth usage through the roof resulting in her site going offline for a short period.
We then set up the same security system as we'd done on ours, but we even had to take the unprecedented step of blocking transmissions from a number of countries. Yes.....it was that bad. I'm pleased to report that since then everything is back to normal.....however, as in the case of our site, we're monitoring any traffic to her site very carefully.

So why were we, and our client, attacked in this manner?
The common denominator is we've both been in our respective business sectors for nearly 20 years and are very well established. It could well be the case that we're the dominant entities in our markets......and if either of us were taken out of commission then others could potentially stand to gain from it. Neither of us have any problems with any person (client or otherwise) past or present, and neither of us have any bad business relationships with competitors or associates. So there's absolutely nothing conclusive to go on.

The fact remains that two of us with current and secure software were taken out of commission in a clinical, systematic, and sustained manner. This was no script kiddy or opportunist behind it.....this was a pro who no doubt was being paid to get the desired result. Disruption was minimal in both cases as we were on it fast......but it just goes to show that even when even when all your web applications are up to date, a pro can still get to you. If you're running obsolete software then the result will not be a short disruption, it'll be a trainwreck......but that's your choice.

The cold, hard truth is that even if all applications are up to date and all normal security processes are in place, you're still vulnerable. Not vulnerable in relation to the amateur hackers (like obsolete sites are), but you are most definitely vulnerable to the pros. And it doesn't cost much for somebody to hire a pro to do this sort of job! Both my client and I are fairly sure this is what happened in our cases......and we may not be in the clear yet, as only time will tell.

My feeling on this whole business is that now I would never run a site of mine without having the commercial firewall (and other initiatives) in place. Our property was violated....the site felt "dirty" afterwards so we replaced it entirely. If you've ever had a car stolen and returned then it's the same feeling, and I don't want to be in that position again. Let's talk FACTS!

Facts about Web Design

Let's talk FACTS! The reality is that there are many good web designers in Spain who you could choose for your new website, and there's also some who may deliver a less than stellar experience. So how do you know who to choose? Well in my case, I'll actually suggest the ones I know who are totally professional. Like us, they've been around a long time, and have an excellent reputation. We're quite open about this, and despite the fact we're all doing the same thing, we're generally using different platforms and systems to do it. 

It may be the case that one of them would be a better fit for you than us.....and if so we'll give you all their details. No designer can be all things to all men, so beware of any that claim that they are. Simply because a project emanating from a knowledge base that is one mile wide and only one inch deep is never going to deliver the experience that a specialist can.
It's in your interest to check any potential designer's work, and always take up references from existing professional clients. Any experienced Pro will have a lot of them, not just one or two from a couple of very low key projects. You can see some of ours HERE!

Now whether you know this or not, it's a fact that you're going to need ongoing help and support after you've taken delivery of your website. If you get a site from a "sell it and forget it" type of operation then I guarantee that it's not going to end well.
I know because of the number of people who get referred to me when a serious situation occurs with their current designer.
It can get very messy indeed involving loss of money, loss of site, loss of domain name etc.....so do your research. If you make a purchasing decision based on the cheapest you can find, and without practicing due diligence, then be aware there could be a trainwreck up ahead. And you're going to be in it!

We've always felt that the level of after sales service and ongoing support that we provide is outstanding. And our clients think so too! After all, we have over 500 of them.....and there has to be a reason for that. Here's some facts for you to consider:

1. A client contacted us with a problem on Xmas Day. They got a two minute response and five minute resolution. FACT!

2. Contact your current web designer at 11PM on a Saturday night and see how long before you get a response. If you're a client of ours it'll be 5 minutes. FACT!

3. Unlike many others who only run reseller accounts from web hosting providers, we run our own Dedicated Servers in London and Chicago. Essentially, we are the host, there's nobody else involved apart from the on-site technicians within the respective datacentres. The only people on our servers are our web design clients with the sites that we built.
We don't provide web hosting to outsiders simply because we don't want anything introduced onto the server that could have a negative effect on our business clients' sites. Yes.....we turn away hosting business on virtually a weekly basis so we can have a clean house. FACT!

4. Every site has a remote monitoring system connected to it. So if a site fails to load we'll have a notification within 5 minutes.....and we react immediately to get it running again. If your site is running on a reseller account with another designer then you'll be the first one to notice it.....and maybe it's been down for days and you didn't know?
At that point you'll need to contact your designer and wait for them to respond to your mail. Unfortunately it doesn't end there, because then they have to wait for their hosting provider to respond to their support ticket. Timescale? Your guess is as good as mine on that......but it certainly won't be the five minute action that we provide. FACT! 

5. Site backups? Most people don't think twice about this, and if you're one of those, you'd better start now because your business may depend on it. Our system is that we use the commercial R1Soft Backup platform. This makes 10 incremental backups over the course of a month: At 1AM on every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the application copies all your data to a remote server. So think of it like the Windows restore points on your PC......the site can be rolled back to a previous date.
That system takes considerable investment in both time and money to operate, plus we have to pay for the additional 1TB storage space that it needs. But that's what we do, and it's there for your protection! FACT!

6. Every site has an additional database backup every night at midnight. This actually gets stored in a secured folder under our WebSpain domain name account so it's instantly accessible by us at anytime. That's a database restore in minutes! FACT!

7. Every site that we build has security updates applied to it through the lifetime of that particular version. As a rough guide, each version will run for about 3 years before it becomes end of line. During that time we could have updated it up to 25 times to keep it as secure as possible. Cost to the client? Zero! We do it because that's the professional way things should be done. We do not compromise on Security! FACT!

8. We monitor server logs and security alerts throughout the day. If there's any potential malicious activity occurring then we'll know all about it, and take appropriate action. If you are hosted on somebody else's reseller account they'll never even see these notifications because they don't have root access. So our level of vigilance is considerably higher than most! FACT!

9. Sometimes E-mails can't be delivered because there's a problem on the recipient's server! We let you know if this happens, so no more disappearing mails and possible loss of business. We cover all of that as part of our service! FACT!

10. We do not sub-contract any of our work to third parties......never have and never will. In rare circumstances we do bring in a specialist coder if you have bespoke requirements relating to XML property imports, but we'll put him in contact with you direct. You pay him, and unlike many others, we don't add any additional charge to that. Everything we do is completely transparent! FACT!

There's actually many other elements to our service that you'll never know about until you become a client. But you'll see that some of them are mentioned in What The People Say by our clients. The point here is that with us, the response, interest, and level of personal service don't cease to exist after purchase. If anything, it gets better. We've got many clients who've been with us for over 10 years now, and in our industry that's pretty remarkable. What does that tell you?

If you're comparing web designers......then compare on a like for like basis! We've listed above some of the things that we bring to the table.....so go ahead and check how many of those aspects that other web designers actually deliver!
It comes down to this: Back in 1998 my goal was to build a business that would last a lifetime.....rather than some cowboy outfit that wouldn't even last a lunchtime. And in that respect I've succeeded.....because WebSpain will outlive me for sure! Now that's a FACT......and who else can say that?

A Change of Mind!

What I want to do in this article is hopefully give you some ideas on how you can make your life so much easier......while being much more efficient. I know that some of the options may not be what you want to hear.....because the older we get, the more resistant we become to change. But over the years I've made these changes, and it's made a big difference in the way I work.

1. Stop using Windows! Though if you happen to take some perverse pleasure in paying for an operating system that compels you to battle with your computer in an endless cycle of computer crashes, registry errors, defragging hard drives, and battling viruses and Trojans......then ignore this!
Me, I can live without all that angst.....and I have done for 10 years by using Linux. None of those scenarios ever occur, it just works. And even better, the operating system is free forever.  
I know some of you will say......I'm too used to Windows! Actually you're not! Because if you own an Android phone, a Tablet, or a Chromebook, you're already using Linux! Android is a Linux based system. The servers that run your websites are Linux, 95% of the world's supercomputers run Linux, and even NASA and the International Space Station run on Linux!
Seeing a pattern here?

2. This one actually goes hand in hand with my first point. If you stop using Windows then you can kiss Outlook goodbye.
But if you're one of those masochistic types who feel that they can't live without the misery-inducing trauma of a Windows system.....then just get rid of Outlook. You wouldn't believe the number of clients I've seen over the years lose all their data because they insisted on clinging to this application. And you also need to be worried about Ransomware (where you have to pay €350+ to get your computer unlocked), along with malware sending out thousands of hardcore mails.....in your name.
So that's your credibility gone, along with your domain getting blacklisted all over the internet of course. There's better options!

3. Internet Explorer....and whatever this ludicrous new Windows 10 browser is called! Stop using them! I've seen enough virus infestations and browser hijacks over the years that can be traced back to IE to know that you don't go there. There's better options!

3. We all use E-Mail......it's a critical tool for us. So why are some of you still storing it on your computers via something like Outlook? This isn't 2005....we now live in the mobile era so you need to be platform and computer independent. Instant access to all your data wherever you are and whatever device you use is now a critical part of moderrn business. The key to all this? GMail.
Hands down it's the best tool for the job! If you use the Chrome browser (which is what I recommend) then you have so many extensions available that allow you to tweak it to exactly what you want. And remember you can set up your business mail address as an alias, so as far as everybody is concerned it actually came from your private mail account. The power of having every e-mail you've ever sent, along with full contact details of all your clients in the palm of your hand is a revelation.
You don't need to be detached from your business communications and all your data.....just use Gmail.

4. Of course when you store all your data within GMail contacts it becomes accessible via other mobile applications......in particular, Whatsapp! Free calls to anybody in the world opens up a whole new world of business opportunities, so make sure you get both Whatsapp and Skype details from all new contacts. You now have an easy way to keep lines of communication open for business, and remember that if you don't do it......your competitors will.

5. This one is common sense.....but I doubt many of you reading this article actually do it! And it's backup the data on your PC's every week! Plug in external USB, copy the data from your documents folder, then disconnect from the PC. Do not leave it connected. In my 28 years in IT I've known businesses go under because they failed to listen to this advice.....so take this very seriously.

Now here's the bottom line! You can continue to pay for commercial software that complicates your life.....or you can use free open source applications that will make your life easier. The mobile era has completely changed the game! But have you changed with it......or are you still clinging to the way you've always worked?
My way of thinking is if you're still stuck in the 2005 way of doing things, then maybe it's time to move on?

At the end of 2009 we desperately needed to overhaul our website for our 10-year old walking tours business – On Foot in Spain. With great reluctance we sought a new web designer and webmaster. After receiving numerous estimates and speaking with various web designers, Pete Jones of WebSpain stood head and shoulders above the rest. From the first time I spoke with him, I was impressed with his professionalism, knowledge, honesty and superb client service.

Pete transformed what was an agonizing, stressful yet necessary part of our business into a painless and very positive element. For six years now Pete and his family have provided impeccable, remarkable service, kept us up to date on the current trends, provided key insider knowledge regarding the industry and its developments and always sought to keep us cutting edge.

Is Content Still King?

I think you may find this very interesting......and hopefully it will change your way of thinking about the processes involved with attaining good search engine positioning. Because once and for all I'm going to explode the myth of the SEO Magic Bullet!

To get the full picture, let's take a trip down Memory Lane back to 1996 at the very dawn of the Internet, when Bill Gates made his famous "Content is King" speech! It's long since been deleted from his page, but I managed to trace the full article on the WayBack Machine.

Some of the many interesting (and prophetic) points that he made were these:
"Content is where I expect much of the real money will be made on the Internet" and "If people are to be expected to put up with turning on a computer to read a screen, they must be rewarded with deep and extremely up-to-date information that they can explore at will".

So what Bill Gates was saying is that Content would be the primary driving force behind the growth of the internet. Now here we are 20 years later.....and what's changed? In my opinion.....only peoples' perceptions of what is actually important to their websites. Because many still believe in this mythical Magic Bullet of SEO practices being the be all and end all of how successful their site will be. 

It's understandable they think that way.....just look at the never ending wave of BS and white noise they get bombarded with via e-mails trying to peddle various SEO services that supposedly "guarantees" them Google number 1. Plus, let's not forget the mass of self appointed SEO "experts" giving advice on their Google Adwords funded blogs, and of course the guy down the pub who has got "connections" at Google. 

I do accept that certain onsite initiatives can influence Google's assessment of your site, but these cannot counteract poor quality or non-existent content on your website. I've told people this for years, but invariably they don't want to accept it.
So I'm going to put this SEO Magic Bullet myth to bed once and for all! To do this, I ran 3 SEO audits using one of the highest rated and most precise professional analysis tools that are available.

Here's Site A....which was WebSpain! And what do you know?.....we got a fairly respectable 88%.

But how does that relate to our position on Google? We're always around the top.....we have been for years in fact. Same on Bing and Yahoo too. So initially it appears as if the onsite initiatives that we did have got us to that position. But one test proves nothing......so let's look at one of our clients' sites.

This is Site B, who is one of our clients......and it's also 88%. Which demonstrates that there's nothing been done on our site that hasn't been done to our clients' sites. In fact everything is the same including the software! Presumably this one should be number 1 or thereabouts as well? Well it isn't....it's at the bottom of page 3. What? Look at the SEO score....it doesn't make sense! When I had this result I then went to the top ranked site in their industry (who's not a client of ours) and ran the test.

WebSpain Content Marketing 

This is Site C, who is not one of our clients.....and they scored 75%, which is a fairly decent result. But it's obviously a long way behind the 88% of our client's site. So we have a strange situation here! A site with 88% SEO on the bottom of page 3, while another site with 75% SEO that is ruling Google! How can this happen?

It happened because the technical audit for onsite SEO initiatives is not sophisticated enough to assess the quality and relevance of the content in the way that the Google searchbot does it. After examining Site C, I came to these conclusions:

1. Site B (done by us) looked visually better and had more technical optimisations than Site C. So everything we were physically able to do, we had done.

2. Site C (not done by us) looked the poor relation, but their content was very good indeed for that genre. It was educating and informing readers, telling them what to look out for, giving them tips and ideas, and answering any potential queries.

So what can we learn from this? Site A (WebSpain) had the technical initiatives and the content, while Site B (our clients) had the technical initiatives, but was let down by a lack of quality content. And Site C (not our clients) overcame the lack of technical initiatives by having good content that delivered value and information to the users.

It validates everything we've ever said.....no amount of SEO enhancements will ever compensate for lacklustre content. 

And what did Bill Gates say 20 years ago? "Content is where I expect much of the real money will be made on the Internet".
He wasn't wrong! And not just any content.....he was referring to quality content. Don't fall into the trap of thinking any content is good.....it's not! It is quality not quantity that gets results!

The best way I can sum all this up is to say that it appears that Content is still King......but be aware that Content Marketing is now Queen.
