None of our clients have ever received a message of this nature, and we aim to make sure it stays that way. We do that by ensuring that your sites, all addon components, and all server applications are up to date. Plus, the sites and the servers have additional commercial security applications in place as further lines of defence against unwanted visitors.
Just because no client of ours has ever experienced this scenario doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. It does......every day! If you look at the Sucuri Security Analysis you can see for yourself how many sites do get hacked......we're talking of thousands on a daily basis. The fact of the matter is that every 4 to 5 years, a site will reach the stage where it can't take any more security patches or run on later PHP versions. The reason for this is that the application is now totally out of date and contains multiple deprecated and end of life processes that need to be totally removed from the installation. That is the point where it needs to be replaced as you can't keep papering over the cracks.....you can only go so far. Though by that time it's going to look very visually dated to users anyway, which is not a good way to present yourself to potential clients. Dormant site equals dormant business in the view of end users.
At that stage we can no longer support sites of this nature as they represent a danger not just to themselves, but to every other client on the server. We won't take risks of this nature......the wellbeing of our clients' businesses is too important to us. Unfortunately, some clients refuse to accept our recommendations. Obviously they don't consider their site security to be of any relevance, so they find a web hosting provider who doesn't consider their server and client security to be of any relevance either. Now you have the perfect storm!
This is just playing Russian Roulette......and one day you will get the loaded barrel. It's just a matter of time. And that time arrived for one former client this week when he received this mail from his current provider.
We have found that your site is potentially compromised/hacked. Our scanning systems have provided the following information regarding the issue: Malware detected. Our Team cares greatly about your site's health and well being and we recommend one of the following options which we have documented in detail for your review: Have a developer clean the site or request a site sanitization from us ($90)
Due to the nature of the problem, we need an immediate response from you. Simply respond to this email letting us know what option you are choosing. If we do not hear back, the site will be isolated and blocked to protect your site data as well as the network.
His provider can clean up the malware for $90.......but that hasn't changed the status of his site one bit. All they will do is remove the malware - his site is still in the same outdated and vulnerable position it was before it got hacked. So within a week or so it'll get hacked again resulting in another $90 cleanup bill. And this will continue ad infinitum until he replaces the installation entirely.
Unfortunately, it's not just the cost of the cleanup processes! It's the lost business, the diminished client confidence, the disruption, and the resulting stress of a trainwreck like that. And just when you think it can't get any worse you find that Google has blacklisted your site because it's found the malware on there. Be aware that websites lose about 95% of their traffic when blacklisted by Google, and getting them to reassess your site status can take some time.
It's not the first time this has happened to an ex-client and it won't be the last. There is an easier way of course - just listen to the security advisories that we give on your site status. After all, if your mechanic tells you that your brakes are about to fail........do you then carry on driving regardless, thinking it won't happen to you?
Nothing is more important than security......and there can be no compromises in this area. Seriously......just don't risk it!

By that, I mean Property Agents, Tourism, Automotive, Construction etc. In fact anything where you can incorporate visual elements to get user attention. YouTube is a key element here! Remember that this is part of Google's empire, so it carries a lot of authority. Haven't you noticed that when you search for something on Google that YouTube videos keep popping up as suggestions? That could be your business leapfrogging into a high position on the front page.
YouTube is literally a Content Marketing goldmine with billions of views every day, with viewers consuming roughly one billion hours of content on a daily basis. That's a huge outreach that you could tap into! Just embedding videos into your site that nobody will ever see is a waste of time.......let YouTube promote your business for you!
And it's so easy to do! Create a YouTube channel for your business via your Google account, record your content via your smartphone, and then upload to YouTube. Make sure you give a short description using your critical keywords and phrases, use YouTube's tagging feature for keywords......and then add a link to your site. It's absolutely critical that you add this link to drive traffic to your website - and increased organic traffic has the knock-on effect of potentially boosting your rankings.
Video is a critical marketing tool these days......and one that you should definitely consider to increase your outreach. It gives you the ability to share more information about your brand, your values, and your products and services with a wider audience simply by leveraging the power of video content.
I'll openly confess that I don't do it......simply because I have nothing of value to actually record on film. But if there's an opening for YOU to use it via a YouTube channel, then definitely consider it to promote your business and get yourself in front of potential clients!
Technology keeps on moving forward at a rapid pace both in hardware and software. You either stay with it or you try and struggle by with the technology of yesteryear. That's not a good way to do business......and eventually you won't have a business! So this month our old Dedicated Server in London (circa 2014) was finally retired and replaced with a powerhouse system to keep us at the forefront of the industry.
So what's changed?
Our new server is an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2450 0 @ 2.10GHz with 32 CPUs and 20 MB SmartCache. Among it's capabilities are Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology, and Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x).
As per our previous server, we have 32GB RAM.....but of a much later generation for faster speeds.
This is the biggest game-changer of the lot because our old 1TB SATA drive has been replaced by 6 x 480GB Solid State Drives (SSD).
SSD Drives use flash memory to deliver vastly superior performance and durability over traditional SATA hard drives. Because without moving parts to slow your computer down, SSD's offer instant-load performance, and faster application loading times. Plus, they're more durable! With traditional hard drives, the continuous motion generated by small moving parts creates heat, which is a leading factor in hard drive failure. SSD is what you actually have in your mobile phone, and you know how much quicker that is compared to your nomal desktop PC.
The reason you don't have SSD drives in your home computer is price. They are very expensive.....and we've got SIX of them.
RAID 6 Array
The 6 SSD drives are set up in a RAID 6 configuration. This means that the system can continue to run after two disks fail, and lost data can be automatically reconstructed by the IOA after a disk failure. Also, two failed disk units can be replaced without stopping the system. I certainly don't want to test this aspect, but it's nice to have the peace of mind that goes with it.
To summarise, we want to offer the best hosting experience possible. This massive technology upgrade ensures that we can continue to provide high spec servers populated with a very low number of clients, delivering maximum CPU and memory allocation. This is the critical factor NOT diskspace! So don't be misled by ridiculous marketing ploys about unlimited webhosting which doesn't actually exist.
Don't think for one minute that you will get the same experience on some hosting reseller offering resources that they don't actually have, while simultaneously quoting prices that are financially unsustainable. Not all web hosting is the same.
Please note that these hosting services are only available to our web design clients on sites that we have built. We do not accept outside hosting clients as we will not introduce any risky, outdated, or vulnerable software onto our servers. Yes......we turn hosting clients away on a weekly basis! Crazy business logic so I've been told......but we're not compromising our standards.
Our goal is to give our clients the best experience possible, and we try our very best to achieve that. Hence the major upgrade of our hosting infrastructure to reflect the ongoing advancements in technology. In this industry, if you're not moving forward, then you're actually going backwards.....and we've always chosen to lead from the front!
Peace of Mind......how much is that worth to you? Is it even possible to even put a price on it? Because when prospective clients initially contact us, they invariably want a quotation based on their requirements. That's quite understandable......we know they'll be contacting other designers with the same request in order to compare prices.
However, a price comparison is only valid when you're comparing "like for like". And in our case that's going to be difficult, because the depth of service and support that we provide on an ongoing basis far exceeds most other web designers. That, alone, is what makes us different, because we bring peace of mind!
Now I'm aware that there are many good web designers out there......but there are also a large number of "putter-uppers".
Basically a "putter-upper" can be defined as someone who puts a site up, takes the money.....and is gone! If you've got problems you're on your own! Not sure how to do something or need advice? Then be prepared to cross their palm with even more silver first.
A "putter-upper" sees the transaction as a one night stand, whereas a professional web designer is looking to build a longterm relationship. Who would you prefer to entrust the future of your business with?
To illustrate this point, I'm going to recount a real life example that we experienced recently when a potential client made the wrong choice! It's by no means a one-off scenario......it tends to happen on a regular basis as people prioritise "cheap" as the overriding factor in their purchasing decision. This course of action rarely ends well! We all want value for money......but some things you just don't cut corners on, because not all web designers are created equal!
The story goes like this: We were contacted in June by someone wanting a quotation for a business site. After speaking to them and analysing their requirements we gave them a price.....and never heard any more. Until last week!
Back they came, but with a request for us to repair a site because it had been hacked and destroyed within a month. Apparently their "web designer" didn't want to know and blamed the Hosting company. The Hosting company (who are bottom of the barrel as well) blamed the web designer. The Hosts did manage to restore the site from a backup taken a month ago (so they lost a month's data)......but they were then back to where they were prior to hacking. Just a matter of time before it's blitzed again!
We always make it clear that we don't work on other peoples' sites....only our own. After all.....if you're not a WebSpain client you can't expect to receive the premium level of support that our clients enjoy. As it was, the site was done in Wordpress, and we're solely Joomla developers.....so we couldn't have helped anyway. But I did give them details of a couple of developers who may be able to sort it out......but their services won't come cheap.
What a mess......and with a site that was only a month old! That trainwreck happened because they prioritised "cheap" over everything else. They did not compare "like for like" or even consider the necessity of ongoing support or assistance. Ultimately, the cheap price from the "putter-upper" is going to turn out to be a lot more costly in the long run, without even factoring in the stress, frustration, and helplessness when faced with a situation that they didn't understand.
Obviously, there's absolutely nothing wrong with looking for a competitive price when you're buying something. But don't confuse "cheap" with "value for money", because these are two different things. Compare prospective designers on a "like for like" basis!
As far as what we bring to the table, it's 40 years business experience, 30 years of which is in IT, with the last 20 years solely in Web Design and Hosting. Remember what I said.....you must compare "like for like".
So if you're looking for a total web package incorporating both design and hosting.....do your research. The professionals may be slightly more expensive, but as people find out, it can ultimately end up costing you a whole lot more when you deal with an amateur! Practise due diligence, look for a verifiable track record at a professional level, read Client Testimonials and take up references!

I'm sure you're all familiar with the phrase "you get what you pay for", and this has never been more true than in the case of internet services. Particularly web hosting! "The saying "You do not know what you have until it's gone" has never been so true for my husband and I.
Having been with WebSpain for around 9 years, WebSpain not only built our two business websites we were a hosting client too. During this whole time we had no issues whatsoever with our sites or hosting.
However as time went on our sites were considered "old " in the techno world and we didn't really have time to get round to upgrading them. This meant that as our sites were old, Webspain could not really support them any longer on their servers, as they are exceptionally up to the minute with hosting etc. Therefore we had to move. We changed to another hosting company and have had nothing but problems since. These varied from no e-mails, lost emails, and site down time, all of which is a nightmare when running a web based business. In the end we could not even get our e-mails.
So in desperation, we went to Pete for help and he ended up logging onto their server and rectifying the issue that the other hosting company were unable to do. The standard of service and professionalism of WebSpain can really not be compared to the many other companies out there. Believe me, we know and it has cost us dearly".
And that is the reality of the situation! I know the hosting company that she's with, and overall they have a good reputation. But we deliver a total allround package that far exceeds what any pure web host offers......and once you get accustomed to that as being the norm then anything else is going to fall short.
We haven't published this to blow our own trumpet, we've published this to make you aware of the reality here. And the reality is that you cannot compare the service that a basic web host provides against the totally rounded and all encompassing range of services that we deliver. They are totally different things.
In some cases you could save yourself a few Euros by switching to someone who just provides web hosting.....or you could even pay more. But in both cases you are still not going to get the allround level of service that we deliver.
All you will do is introduce a different element into the equation. And that element is grief! And going from my experience, the less you pay, the more the grief is going to increase! Just remember that not all web hosting is created equal, and Life on the Dark Side may not be what you expect.
